A-Level Chemistry builds on chemical concepts from GCSE. On this course you will develop essential knowledge and understanding of different Chemistry topics and how they interrelate. You will study topics including atomic structure, electrons and bonding, the periodic table, organic chemistry, modern analytical techniques, energy and resources. Over the course you will deepen understanding of how science works; appreciate how society makes decisions about scientific issues and how science affects the economy, environment and society; develop safe and effective practical skills of manipulating lab equipment, handling chemicals, observation, analysis and evaluation; develop your enthusiasm for chemistry and prepare for further study and careers in chemistry and the sciences.

At A level you will develop essential knowledge and understanding of different areas of Chemistry and how they inter-relate and develop safe and effective practical skills of manipulating laboratory equipment.
There are six teaching modules in the new OCR specification: Practical skills in Chemistry, Foundation in Chemistry, Periodic table and energy, Core organic Chemistry, Physical chemistry and transition elements, and Organic chemistry and analysis
Our general entry criteria to study 3 A-Levels is: Minimum five GCSEs grade 4-9 with English Language or Maths at grade 5. For a mixed Level 3 programme the criteria are: Minimum five GCSEs grade 4-9 with English Language or Maths at grade 4. Subject specific entry criteria apply: A GCSE grade 5 in Maths, Combined Science 66 or Chemistry grade 6.
The content will be assessed by three written exams at the end of the second year. There will also be a practical endorsement of Chemistry which will be assessed (non-exam) as part of the course.
At the end of the second year you will achieve an A level in Chemistry.
A-Level Chemistry is essential for entry to courses in medicine, dentistry, veterinary science, biochemistry, pharmacy, some biology courses, chemical engineering, and, obviously, chemistry.
Students are expected to buy a course textbook (approximately £20) each year; there is an optional revision guide (approximately £10) each year.
This course is a 3 A level equivalent course taught over 2 years. Just like A level programmes, which are split into AS followed by A2, you will gain a qualification in the first year (the Edexcel BTEC Level 3 Foundation Diploma in Engineering) and then go on to complete the whole Extended Diploma by the end of year 2. Universities value Extended Diploma students for their wide ranging knowledge and because the course structure forms a good preparation for the more independent styles of study found in higher education.
