During the first year, you will study two units. In the Changing Awareness of Crime unit, you will develop an understanding of different types of crime, influences on perceptions of crime and why some crimes are unreported. Knowing about the wide range of different crimes and the reasons people have for not reporting such crimes provides an understanding of the complexity of behaviours and the social implications of such crimes and criminality. You will also understand criminal theories, why people commit crimes, and explore the difference between criminal behaviour and deviance.
The second unit will explore the Crime Scene to Courtroom. You will get an understanding of the criminal justice system from the moment a crime has been identified to the verdict. You will develop skills needed to examine information in order to review the justice of verdicts in criminal cases. You will also build awareness of criminality, criminological theories and the process of bringing an accused to court in order to evaluate the effectiveness of social control to deliver criminal justice policy.
Our general entry criteria to study 3 A-Levels is: Minimum five GCSEs grade 4-9 with English Language or Maths at grade 5. For a mixed Level 3 programme the criteria are: Minimum five GCSEs grade 4-9 with English Language or Maths at grade 4. Subject specific entry criteria apply: A GCSE grade 4 in English Language.
The Level 3 Applied Certificate in Criminology is assessed through a combination of one written examinations, set and marked by WJEC, and one centre-marked assignment.
Once you have completed this course, you will achieve a WJEC Level 3 Applied Certificate in Criminology which is graded A* - E.
Once you have finished this course, you could progress to universities across the country to study a range of Criminology-related degree courses. Many of these courses can lead to careers in the Police, the Armed Forces, into social work, probation service, as a youth worker.
There may be some additional costs for trips to House of Commons and local law courts.
