During this one-year course you will develop a range of skills and knowledge across the construction industry, helping you to specialise in a one particular area. Learning will take place in our purpose built workshops, where you will try your hand at a number of carpentry, plumbing, bricklaying and painting tasks. You will become familiar with a saw, learn how to mix cement, and paint walls. English and maths is also an essential part of this course.
You will develop your skills and knowledge in the following areas:
You will need to demonstrate an ability to achieve Level 1 English and maths by the end of the course through an initial assessment.
Your assessment will consist of 80% practical tasks with 20% coursework and written work supporting practical activities.
On completion of the course you will have developed a range of skills that will allow you to seamlessly progress onto a Level 1 course in one of the four areas on construction, in bricklaying, site carpentry or painting and decorating or maintenance operations.
With some additional training you may then decide to focus your career in one of the four construction areas to become a bricklayer, plumber, carpenter or painter and decorator.
A range of specified PPE and other items, costing approximately £40, will be required for this course.
In addition you will also be required to provide safety boots, overalls and navy/black polo shirt. There are also a number of opportunities throughout the year for various construction related trips which may also incur a cost.
The UK construction industry is worth almost £100bn per year and accounts for more than one in 20 of all jobs.
