What will I study?

On this course you will learn culinary practical skills for preparation, cooking and presentation methods for a variety of dishes for the Bistro. What previous qualifications or experience do I need?

Minimum four grade 3-9 at GCSE or successful completion of the Level 1 course, and English or maths at grade 3.

How will I be assessed?

Timed practical assessments, theory assignments and controlled question and answer tests, a variety of multiple choice tests, e-Portfolio management and 30 hours of work experience.

What qualification will I achieve?

Professional Cookery Level 1 Diploma Food and Beverage service Level 1 Certificate

What can I do after completing this course?

Successful completion of this course and English & Maths (if part of your study programme) will give you the opportunity to progress to other Hospitality & Catering courses or other courses within the college.

Are there any extra costs?

You will need to purchase a set of Chef’s Whites which will include safety shoes, your own knife set and Front of House uniform at a cost of approximately £200.00. (If you require any financial advice or guidance, please contact our Student Services department).

Trips and visits for which £50.00 is payable at enrolment together with a materials fee of £75.00. The material fee covers £30.00 for Practical cookery text book, £25.00 for print credits & £20.00 to contribute to ingredients used throughout the year.

Additional Info

To progress on this course, and to go further in training or at work, it’s essential to have good Maths and English alongside vocational expertise. We encourage all applicants to work to achieve GCSE English and maths before leaving school, if at all possible. However, if you have not yet achieved a GCSE in maths and/or English (grades A*-C) you will continue to study these subjects as a compulsory part of your programme. If you are not ready to retake your GCSE, you will study these subjects as Functional Skills.
